Instituto Butantan is offering two Post-Doctoral scholarships — Post-Doctoral Fellowship in Systematics, Taxonomy and Biogeography, and Post-Doctoral Fellowship in Phylogeny, Taxonomy and Evolution.

Post-Doctoral Fellowship in Systematics, Taxonomy and Biogeography

Nº: 6250
Field of knowledge: Zoology
FAPESP process: 2022/12588-1
Project title: Phylogeny and biogeography of armored trapdoor spiders with Gondwanan distribution: continental and intercontinental diversification patterns in Idiopinae (Idiopidae, Mygalomorphae)
Working area: Systematics, Taxonomy and Biogeography
Number of places: 1
Principal investigator: Antonio Domingos Brescovit
Unit/Instituition: Instituto Butantan
Deadline for submissions: 2023-08-10
Publishing date: 2023-07-26
Locale: Av. Vital Brasil, 1500 (Laboratório de Coleções Zoológicas), São Paulo
E-mail for proposal submission: [email protected]

Summary

The candidate will work under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Antonio Domingos Brescovit (Butantan Institute in São Paulo city, Brazil), coordinator of the project “Systematics of Neotropical Haplogyne Spiders (Arachnida, Araneae)”, to which the research is associated.

The main objective is to test the subfamily Idiopinae monophyly (Idiopidae, known as armoured trapdoor spiders), and to comprehend their evolutionary and biogeographic history, focused on the genus Idiops; using phylogenetic and phylogenomic analyses, based on morphological characters and on the sequence capture of Ultraconserved Elements.

The necessary requirements are: expertise on Idiopidae systematics and taxonomy, especially on morphological and morphometric characters of the genus Idiops; understanding of the diversity patterns of the biomes where those spiders occur; and experience with evolutionary and biogeographical analysis. Experience in molecular data sequencing and processing, molecular probe techniques and phylogenomic analysis is desirable.

Applicants must send a cover letter and résumé by 08/10/2023, demonstrating their experience and qualifications, to [email protected] (with [email protected] in copy).

This opportunity is open to candidates of any nationality. The selected candidate will receive a Post-Doctoral fellowship from the São Paulo Research Foundation (FAPESP) in the amount of R$ 9,047.40 monthly and a research contingency fund, equivalent to 10% of the annual value of the fellowship which should be spent on items directly related to the research activity.

Post-Doctoral Fellowship in Phylogeny, Taxonomy and Evolution

Nº: 6251
Field of knowledge: Zoology
FAPESP process: 2022/12588-1
Project title: Evolution, Catalogue, Taxonomy and Phylogeny of the genus Ananteris Thorell, 1891: Contribution for the Neotropical scorpion fauna
Working area: Phylogeny, Taxonomy and Evolution
Number of places: 1
Principal investigator: Antonio Domingos Brescovit
Unit/Instituition: Instituto Butantan
Deadline for submissions: 2023-08-10
Publishing date: 2023-07-26
Locale: Av. Vital Brasil, 1500 (Laboratório de Coleções Zoológicas), São Paulo
E-mail for proposal submission: [email protected]

Summary

The main objectives of this project are to test the monophyly of the genus Ananteris; to assess the relations between its species, in order to organize the group taxonomy and to establish a phylogenetic hypothesis; and to contribute to the cataloging, uploading and validation of information on scorpion biodiversity through digital platforms, such as the Taxonomic Catalog of the Brazilian Fauna (CTFB) and the Brazilian Biodiversity Information System (SiBBr).

The selected candidate will be based at the Butantan Institute’s Laboratory of Zoological Collection in São Paulo (Brazil), and awarded a post-doctoral fellowship by the São Paulo Research Foundation (FAPESP).

The necessary requirements are: expertise on the genus Ananteris and related scorpion genera (family Buthidae) systematics, taxonomy and conservation, focusing on the diagnostic morphological characters of the group; and understanding of the diversity patterns of the biomes where those taxa occur. Other requirements and values of the FAPESP PD fellowship are described in https://fapesp.br/en/postdoc.

Applicants must send a cover letter and résumé by 08/10/2023, demonstrating their experience and qualifications, to the email [email protected] (with [email protected] in copy).
