Arachnology Research Workshop

Nature is the base for human existence. The more we know, the better we can protect. This workshop will provide knowledge through theory lessons as well as practice in the field. Collecting, preserving, labelling, identifying, nomenclature, publishing … a pipeline for investigating nature‘s biodiversity with a focus on spiders and their relatives will be presented in this workshop.

Criteria for eligibility

Biology students from ASEAN countries (Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Brunei, Vietnam, Laos, Myanmar and Cambodia) can apply. Preferably, candidates study the description of biodiversity and can show that this workshop will strengthen their career path. The workshop is designed for undergraduates but deserving postgraduates may be accepted. Equity and equality measures will be applied. A committee of five scientists will evaluate all applications.

Send your application with a motivation letter (one page), your CV and possible questions in English to [email protected] by the application deadline, 20 June 2023.

Venue

The workshop will take place in a resort in Vang Vieng. This city is reachable from Vientiane by a newly built highway or by train. Forest and cave habitats are available in the surrounding area. Participants will stay in a resort. More information on the programme will be provided later to successful candidates.

Team

Dr. Peter Jäger from the Senckenberg Research Institute is the section head of Arachnology. He visited Laos 14 times as well as other SE Asian countries and has described more than 600 spider species.

MSc Liphone Nopaseud from the National University of Laos wrote his thesis about spiders in a Nature Reserve in Oudomxay Province and holds a position as a lecturer at the NUoL.

Costs

All costs (travel, visa fees, local transport, accommodation, meals) will be sponsored by SenckenbergLeibniz Institution for Biodiversity and Earth System Research and BIOPAT e.V. (both Germany) and the ASEAN Centre for Biodiversity.

Every successful applicant will get a copy of the book Spiders of the World.
