The 4th Conference of the Asian Society of Arachnology will take place on October 9-13, 2017, in the campus of Southwest University, Chongqing, China.
ABOUT THE SOCIETY AND CONFERENCE
Founded in 2012, the Asian Society of Arachnology (ASA) encompasses a vast geographic spread, with members from Southeast Asia, South Asia, Northeast Asia, West Asia and other regions in the world. Members come from widely diverse backgrounds, have very varied requirements – from macro-photography, ecological studies, biological control to molecular phylogeny. They include academic and museum researchers and curators, undergraduates and post-graduate students and naturalists and hobbyists passionate with the studies of Asian spiders and other arachnids. ASA thus provides then with a platform to meet and learn from one and another, open new doors of cooperation and collaboration, and in the process, raise the standards of arachnology in Asia.
The previous three ASA conferences were held in Pakse in Laos (2012), Chiang Mai in Thailand (2014) and Amravati in India (2015). The last conference at Amravati attracted an unprecedented number of participants (130) from 20 countries. The fourth ASA conference will be held at the Southwest University, Chongqing, China.
ABOUT THE CITY
Widely acknowledged as the largest industrial and economic center in southwestern China, Chongqing is a popular travel destination for its hilly slopes, rivers, night views and spicy foods.
With an ancient history dating back to the Old Stone Age (20,000 years ago), Chongqing (spelt as ‘Chungking’ previously) had evolved from a settlement of small primitive tribes to a metropolis. In 1997, it was upgraded administratively as the fourth municipality directly under the China central government (the others are Beijing, Shanghai, Tianjin). Even though Chongqing is the youngest of the four megacities in China, it is the largest in terms of land area (about 82.4 thousand km2) and population (more than 33.7 million).
Chongqing is located at the confluence of Yangtse River and one of her branch, Jialing River, and surrounded by mountains. It is therefore also known as the ‘mountain city’ and ‘the city of fog’. The municipality is well-known for its three selling points: ‘delicious foods’, ‘splendid scenery’ and ‘beautiful girls’.
Welcome to Chongqing! Welcome to China!
